The Chevrolet Blazer EV is a battery electric crossover SUV that shares nothing except a name with the gas-powered Blazer that relaunched in 2018.

The five-seat crossover stretches a bit wider and longer than the Blazer, but rides lower and mounts one of three available battery packs below the floor and between the axles. Offered with front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive, as well as dual-motor all-wheel drive, the Blazer EV is sold in 1LT, 2LT, RS, and SS grades.

The Blazer EV arrived relatively late to the electric crossover segment, and with styling cues adopted from the Camaro muscle car, it squares off against the Ford Mustang Mach-E. It’s almost wagon-like proportions contend with a similar profile in the Kia EV6, but other electric crossovers that beat the Blazer EV to market range from the Hyundai Ioniq 5 to the Volkswagen ID.4, Tesla Model Y, and Nissan Ariya.

The new Chevrolet Blazer EV

The Blazer EV blends the sporty upright presence of the gas Blazer as much as it adopts the curves and bulges of the low-slung Camaro. Consider it a muscle car crossover, by design. Hourglass curves run between flexed fenders over available 22-inch wheels, while the lower half sports black trim elements cladded onto most contemporary SUVs. Yet the raked windshield and low roofline pinch the rear end into a more wagon-like shape. On top trims, a lightbar spans the face and dances upon approach or departure. When charging, the choreography turns blue.

Inside, Chevy buffs up the Blazer’s circular air vents with tubes that burrow deep into the dash. Behind the three-spoke steering wheel, a standard 11.0-inch digital gauge cluster shares a single pane of glass with a 17.7-inch touchscreen that cants toward the driver. A large volume knob and physical climate buttons and dials limit reliance on the screen for every function.

Three battery pack sizes can be fit with three drivetrain options, giving the Blazer EV the advantage of choice over the competition. At the top of the lineup, the SS comes with dual-motor all-wheel drive, and a propulsion system that makes 564 hp and 684 lb-ft of torque. Chevy estimates that it shoots from 0-60 mph in less than four seconds, and it also has an estimated range of 290 miles, though not when going that fast. The FWD 1LT has a 247-mile range, and the 2LT has a 293-mile range with available dual-motor AWD. The RS can be had any way you want it—with front-, rear-, or all-wheel drive—and the range peaks at 320 miles.

Without battery pack sizes, it’s difficult to measure charge times, but the Blazer EV has an 11.5-kw onboard charger and DC fast-charging capability of up to 190 kw. At least three different regenerative braking settings help recapture energy, including a one-pedal driving mode activated with a steering wheel paddle shifter.

Every Blazer EV comes with the standard screens mentioned above as well as driver-assist features such as automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection front and rear, active lane control, and automatic high beams. Options range from a fixed-glass roof with an integrated sunroof to Chevy’s Super Cruise hands-free highway driving system.
