Has Google resurrected its Glass smart glasses programme?
Google reentered the augmented reality (AR) technology scene on Tuesday by announcing new public testing plans for its smart glasses prototype.
During testing, Google will deploy prototypes to Google staff and “trusted testers.” The tech giant is starting its small-scale trial in selected areas in the US with restrictions applied in environments such as schools, government buildings, and healthcare institutions.
Google is expanding its public AR prototype trial from its initial private in-lab testing period to understand better how its extended reality (XR) product can change how individuals live and work.
Public testing kicks off next month, where the Mountain View-based firm will test crucial features like in-lens displays, microphones, and cameras. Although Google is not testing photo or video recording features, it will use the device’s onboard cameras to test AR visualisations, including navigation, translation, transcription, and visual search.
In its supporting documents, Google explained,
“For example, using the camera to translate the menu in front of you or show you directions to a nearby coffee shop, overlaying AR in your line of sight”
Google will record spatial data for analysis and debugging during the trial, but will remove all publically recorded sensitive data and only store the recordings for 30 days to protect user data.
The news comes after Google first reintroduced its AR solution in May at its Google I/O event, showcasing its immersive technology which displays real-time, translated text as an AR visualisation.

Google also revealed its AR prototype hardware during its annual developer conference, and the device appears similar to conventional spectacles away from the original design of the Google Glass.
According to reports in January, Google is deep into developing its upcoming AR headset. Codenamed Project Iris, leaks indicate that Google is working on its latest AR device for shipments in 2024.
