Most people hate the sound of nails on a chalkboard. Some people can’t stand the feeling of wool. I, on the other hand, cannot stand the sound of water.

This morning, on Michael and Maddie, Gazelle and Michael decided to enjoy an iced cold beverage to celebrate the end of Colonial Beverage’s strike.

Gazelle poured his drink into a glass, and as the sound came through my headphones, I shuddered in disgust.

It’s not just water. It’s liquids of any kind, specifically in movies and in songs. When there’s a scene in a movie where the character is having a come-to-Jesus moment in front of the mirror and splashes water on their face, I cringe.

When there is a moment in a song that references drinks and you can hear the drink pouring in the background, the hair on the back of my neck stands up.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand this is odd, but it has been that way since I can remember. There is something about liquid and the way it sloshes around that keeps me up at night.

Moreover, the popularity of ASMR was my worst-nightmare-come-true. Loud and specific noises directly in my ear? No thank you.

I’m not quite ready to call this a phobia because I can handle the sight of liquids and power through these moments that make my skin crawl, but I think I’ll refer to this as my weird sensory quirk.
